How quiet can a Cairo bedroom actually get?
Traffic on a main road, the Ring Road hum, a café downstairs. Most Cairo bedrooms live with a steady noise floor that the body never fully tunes out. The first step to fixing it is knowing the number.
What a decibel actually tells you
Sound is measured in decibels (dB), and the scale is logarithmic, so small numbers hide big differences. A drop of around 10 dB is perceived as roughly half as loud. A bedroom at 70 dB and a bedroom at 50 dB are not "a bit" apart; they are different worlds at 3 a.m.
Why the source matters more than the glass
Two identical windows can produce very different results, because what is outside them differs:
- Continuous traffic is mid-frequency noise, the kind that can be cut most meaningfully.
- Trains and the metro push low frequencies that travel through walls as well as windows.
- Voices and café noise are intermittent, so the quiet between bursts matters as much as the peaks.
That is why a serious soundproofing job starts with a reading at your window, not with a catalogue.
The window is usually the weak point
In a typical apartment wall, the glass and its frame are by far the lightest, leakiest element. Upgrading a single-glazed window to a properly sealed soundproof unit usually does more than anything you could do to the wall itself, and it is a difference you can measure.
Measure, don't guess
Any number promised before someone has stood in your room with a decibel meter is a guess. The honest model is simple: measure before, commit to a target number in writing, measure again after installation.
