Aluminum windows in Egypt: types, profiles, and how to choose well

Aluminum windows dominate Egyptian buildings for good reasons: the material is strong, slim, rust-free, and handles our sun without warping. But two aluminum windows can be worlds apart in quality, and the differences hide in places most buyers never check. This guide covers what actually matters.

Sliding or hinged?

• Sliding: the most common in Egypt. It saves space and suits balconies and wide openings, but by design its sashes glide past each other, so its sealing is naturally weaker unless the system uses proper brush and rubber seals.
• Hinged (casement): the sash presses into the frame on gaskets when it closes, like a fridge door. That pressure is why hinged windows seal and insulate better, and why serious soundproof and thermal windows are usually hinged or tilt-and-turn.

If insulation matters to you, this single choice matters more than any accessory.

Profile thickness: the number sellers rarely volunteer

The aluminum profile has a wall thickness, and in the Egyptian market it commonly runs from about 1.1 mm in budget work up to 1.6 mm and more in quality systems. Thicker walls mean a stiffer sash that does not flex, keeps pressing on its gaskets, and carries heavy glass without sagging. Ask for the thickness in writing and weigh the sash in your hand: flimsy feels flimsy.

A profile versus a system

Cut-and-assembled local sections are cheap and everywhere. A window system is different: profiles, gaskets, rollers, locks, and corner joints engineered together and tested as one unit. Systems cost more and behave better for years. If a seller cannot name the system, you are buying loose sections.

What makes an aluminum window insulate

Bare aluminum conducts heat and vibration very well, which is exactly what insulation does not want. A well-insulated aluminum window fixes that with:

• A thermal break: a polyamide bar splitting the inner and outer aluminum faces.
• Full-perimeter rubber gaskets, not a strip of brush pile.
• Multi-point locking so the sash presses evenly.
• The right glass: for heat, a coated double glazed unit; for sound, two panes of different thicknesses, sealed.

The frame is the skeleton. The glass and the sealing are the insulation.

Colors and finish

Electrostatic powder coating is the standard finish and holds up well in Egyptian weather. Wood-look film finishes exist for those who want the look without wood maintenance. Whatever the finish, the coating quality shows at the cut edges and corners: look there.

Which is better, aluminum or PVC?

Both reach excellent results when the profile is a real system and the glass is right. Aluminum wins on strength, slimness, and very large openings. PVC wins on natural damping and sealing. Judge the assembly, not the material.

Does an aluminum window insulate sound?

Does aluminum rust?
